If you have skin irritation from your rings, the professionals at Schatzley’s Diamond and Jewelry Design Studio recommend the following:
In most cases, it is not the metal that is causing the problem but the soap film that accumulates under the ring, which also prevents the Diamond or other gems from showing their true beauty. We call it detergent burn.
Have your ring completely and thoroughly polished and ultrasonically cleaned by your jeweler. Hopefully he or she will give you a jar of jewelry cleaner. If not, ask for one.
Then, every single day, take your rings off at night and put them in the jar of jewelry cleaner until morning. If you are working in the yard or for whatever reason, you are not wearing your rings, put them in the cleaner, even if you think they are clean. You will know where you left them and they are getting clean at the same time.
Do not put any ring on your finger until the skin irritation is gone. When you think it is gone, wait another week before putting your rings back on.
If you follow this routine, the chances are very good that you will have no more skin irritations and you will enjoy your rings more because they will sparkle like new. No short cuts, please. You should not put pearls, coral, turquoise, Emeralds or opals in the cleaner.
Those of you who are knowingly allergic to nickel cannot wear white gold unless it is made by mixing palladium with the gold to turn it white. Of course, platinum is pure enough not to cause a reaction other than for soap accumulation. Yellow gold made in the US will not have nickel in it. |
